2020 Living History Journal
The global impact of the Covid19 virus is history in the making! Nothing like this has occurred in our lifetime and it will be important to document what life is like for us during this unique time. In 100 years from now, people will rely on many sources of information to learn about what actually happened through the Corona virus pandemic.
Scientists and Historians will examine primary sources (you who are living through it) such as diaries, drawings, and journals. They will also review secondary sources such as documentaries, textbooks and essays. Secondary sources of information interpret and analyze events but primary sources of information are recorded by eyewitnesses that tell what happened from their viewpoint. You are the perfect person right now to be that primary source!
Your task is to create a historical journal/diary/ scrapbook that records the events that are occurring in your life right now. Collect and create evidence that you can include to give as detailed a picture as possible to show what life is like now that we are living in a time of a pandemic.
Choose the format you would like to use for this assignment. Some of you may want to use a hard copy journal, duotang or scrapbook so you can draw, glue in newspaper articles, doodle, add photos etc. and keep it. Others may want to record online.
All printing should be done either on lined paper or on computer and included in the journal. Please be aware of the class expectations re: presentation, neatness and tada ... using a ruler to guide your printing when labelling.
** Please note that this Living History Journal is expected to be submitted for assessment.
Assignment : Each week, starting Monday 13th, you are expected to complete the following in your living history journal.
Personal
Experiences
At least two journal entries per week from your perspective (at least ½ page double spaced each entry). Please write as you did when you wrote in your journals on Monday mornings( using correct sentencing, punctuation, spelling, paragraphing etc) . Use the prompts below if you would like to .
*What were you first reactions to hearing about covid19? ( Remember when we talked about it in January and February?)
*How did the Canadian Federal Government, the Provincial Government and the Municipal Governments react? What have they done to keep people safe?
*What activities are you allowed to participate in and what activities are not allowed?
*How does this impact your life?
*Does it make sense to you?
*How has your family responded?
*How has your family adapted to living day after day in your home?
*Does your family need anything that they cannot get right now?
*How is today different from two or three weeks ago for you, your family, the world?
* What would you have told yourself three weeks ago?
*Is there anything positive about this situation?
* What are you grateful for today?
* Do you think living through this situation will change your thinking?
* What other ideas do you have? Are you worried about anything? .....
News and Headlines
*Add at least one per week of a headline or one News article from a newspaper / tv news presentation or other source. Quote the source including date and where you got the information.
For each entry, record and explain your reaction. (three of four sentences) Do you consider the headline to be truthful? Is the headline making people feel worse or better? What do you wonder?
* Add one per week of the following:
Photo or Drawing, painting , doodle, cartoon that reveals how you feel
Remember - this is a serious record. This is NOT a focus on "funny".
If there are other comments or that you have, such as how health care workers, cashiers, flight attendants, fire fighters and ambulance attendants (EMTs) etc are able to perform their jobs, and how people are helping others in your community, please feel free to write down your thoughts.
How you create your historical journal is up to you, but please put effort into it as it is a true living history. Your personal story is important.
Connections: Do you know of any situations (historical or fictional) where people were isolated in an extreme situation?
All thoughts are welcome.
